Al Adams, born in 1929 in Port Angeles, was a successful dentist on Mercer Island during his adult years. An avid fisherman and passionate supporter of protecting the salmon habitat, he was most known locally for building the first residential salmon hatchery on his own property in the 1970s. His work on wild salmon habitat restoration was written about in several newspapers and magazines throughout the 1970s and 1980s. When Al retired from dentistry and moved to Hood Canal in 1986, he began carving salmon sculptures from cedar wood, using his teeth-carving skills as a dentist as a basis for this new found passion. He founded the Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group and was inducted in the Pacific Northwest Salmon Center's Hall of Fame in 2010. This carving is made from a 700 year old Pacific Cedar Tree and it is modeled after a 75 pound Kenai King Salmon.
