Morehouse college football shirt owned by Samuel B. McKinney, 1940s
Rev. Dr. Samuel B. McKinney (1926-2018) served as pastor of Mount Zion Baptist Church, one of the largest and oldest Black churches in the Pacific Northwest, from 1958 to 1998 and again from 2005 to 2008. McKinney was born in Flint, Michigan and grew up Cleveland, Ohio. In 1949 he graduated from Morehouse College, a prestigious historically Black men’s liberal arts college in Atlanta. There, he was classmates with Martin Luther King Jr. They remained friends after college, and it was at Samuel McKinney’s invitation that King visited Seattle in 1961.
