In 2008, the Gates Foundation challenged Intellectual Ventures to help fix the issue of keeping vaccines cool until they reach patients in far-flung parts of the world. The Arktek Passive Vaccine Storage Device, developed by Global Good, a collaboration between Intellectual Ventures and the Gates Foundation, was designed and manufactured to act as a "super thermos" to refrigerate vaccine supplies until they are ready for use.
