This “Pussyhat” was worn at the Women's March on Seattle (also spelled Womxn's March on Seattle) on January 21, 2017. It was one of hundreds such marches held internationally the day after the inauguration of President Donald Trump. The marches protested the threat to women's rights represented by Trump's policies and vulgar rhetoric. The Pussyhat Project was created in Los Angeles by Jayna Zweiman and Krista Suh, with design by Kat Coyle of the store The Little Knittery. The goal was to create a “sea of pink” with an easy pattern that amateur knitters could create quickly, and destigmatize the word “pussy” both with the playful cat-ear design and reframing the word as a symbol of empowerment. The idea was wildly popular, and the hats were ubiquitous at the marches. However, many trans women and women of color voiced concerns that the hats symbolized privileged, white feminism and were an exclusionary symbol for the trans community.
