This brown leather jacket belonged to Don Holder, who worked in IT at Brittania from 1975 to 1979 and purchased it from the company store. Brittania Sportswear was an influential Seattle-based casualwear brand, credited with bringing fashion jeans from London to the United States in the early 1970s. Prior to this, denim was mostly a workwear staple, available in simple, often unisex cuts. Fashion jeans feature different washes and colors, stylized embellishments, and proportions that reflect the style of the time. Their success turned Seattle into a hotspot for a new generation of jeans and casualwear companies. Brittania’s impact on Seattle’s casualwear industry went beyond what was made to how it was made. They were one of the earliest clothing companies to manufacture exclusively overseas, utilizing Seattle’s port and seeking lower production costs in other countries. While much of that production was done in Asia, this jacket was made in Argentina. Other companies followed suit, and the presence of local clothing manufacturing began to decline.
