Nordstrom began as a shoe retailer established in Seattle in 1901 by Carl Wallin and Swedish immigrant John Nordstrom (Wallin & Nordstrom). By 1929, both Nordstrom and Wallin had retired and sold their shares to Nordstrom's sons, Everett and Elmer. In 1930, when the newly remodeled Second Avenue store was reopened, the name changed to Nordstrom, or sometimes Nordstrom’s. In 1963 the store acquired women’s clothing store Best’s Apparel which was also based in Seattle and family owned. The founder Dorothy Cabot Best had recently passed away and her husband Ivan Lovitch Best had been looking for a buyer for the business. From the mid-1960s until 1973 the store was known as Nordstrom Best. These shoes are marked “Nordstrom’s Shoes // Portland Seattle” which was the logo used just before the acquisition of Best’s. They were made by Deliso Debs, a high-end shoe brand from the period which catered to a youthful clientele.
