Necktie with Brittania label, ca. 1970
Order an ImageGerman immigrant brothers Theodore, Herman, and Max Schoenfeld founded a neckwear company in Seattle in 1906. Schoenfeld Brothers Inc. manufactured at their building at Fairview and Denny and sold products under the label Fashion Craft Neckwear. In 1968, Max’s son Walter became president of the business. Soon after this change, Max launched a new neckwear line called “Brittania.” He had planned to call it “Britannia” as in “Rule Britannia” but not surprisingly the name was already taken by a British company. This tie is most likely from the earliest period of Brittania’s history as a necktie brand. It features an image of a man riding an 1880s-style tricycle. Brittania soon expanded into denim and took off nationally as a jeans brand. By 1980 they were the fourth-largest jeans producer in the country. Their success turned Seattle into a hotspot for a new generation of jeans and casualwear companies.
