In 1987, Seattle theater company On the Boards presented the rap musical “Boys Will B-Boys” at Washington Hall Performance Gallery. It was directed by Steve Sneed, who ran the Madrona Youth Center at the time and managed Seattle’s pioneering hip-hop group the Emerald Street Boys. The Emerald Street Boys also worked as consultants for the show. These jackets were decorated for the cast and producers of “Boys Will B-Boys” with this one belonging to Sneed. The jacket was originally made by local brand Seattle Blues, one of several denim and casualwear companies that sprung up in the region in the 1980s. In 1989 Steve Sneed began an 11-year career as the executive director of Langston Hughes Performing Art Center. He helped save the black arts theater from Parks and Rec’s chopping block and reinvigorated the space with innovative new programing.
