The Gay Games, originally founded as the Gay Olympics in San Francisco in 1982, is a sports and cultural event held every four years that promotes acceptance of sexual diversity, and features lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) athletes, artists and other individuals. The 1990 games took place in Vancouver, British Columbia, where approximately 7,300 athletes competed in 27 sports. Ric Weiland was the first lead programmer for Microsoft, retiring at 35 in 1988. As the value of his stock holdings grew, Weiland increasingly devoted himself to philanthropy, donating nearly $200 million to support HIV research, LGBTQ legal rights, and the presence of gay-straight alliances and anti-bullying policies in schools. It is not known in which sport Weiland won this medal.
