White tank top from Gay Games, 1990
Ric Weiland (1953-2006) wore this tank top as a Team Seattle athlete at the 1990 Gay Games in Vancouver, BC. The Gay Games are an Olympics-like event that promotes athletes who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, sexually-fluid or gender-variant. Weiland was the first lead programmer for Microsoft, retiring at 35 in 1988. As the value of his stock holdings grew, Weiland increasingly devoted himself to philanthropy, donating nearly $200 million to support HIV research, LGBTQ legal rights, and the presence of gay-straight alliances and anti-bullying policies in schools.
