This signed garbage can lid was presented to beloved local TV character J.P. Patches by one of his long-time fans and Patches Pal, Chris Cornell, of Seattle-based rock band Soundgarden. It was part of a promotional event held in 1992 at the Tower Records store once located at the corner of 5th and Mercer in Seattle. J.P. was at the store signing autographs and promoting the sale of VHS tapes of his TV show. The manager of the store was able to get the band members of Soundgarden, Queensrÿche, Pearl Jam, and Alice in Chains, to sign the garbage can lid as a special surprise gift for J.P. And, since the J.P. Patches' character lived at the Seattle City Dump, the garbage can lid was an appropriate token of appreciation. Rock bands Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and Alice in Chains, all formed in Seattle in the late 1980s to early 1990s, and were instrumental in popularizing the grunge scene, while Queensrÿche, a progressive heavy metal band, formed in 1982 in Bellevue.
