Pair of bell-bottom jeans with patches, 1968-1980
Janet Hesslein bought these bell-bottom jeans in 1968 and continued to wear, embroider, and add patches to them as late as 1980. The hippie counterculture of the 1960s was a political movement with an identifiable clothing style. Making and modifying clothes reflected a rejection of the consumerist idea that it is important to constantly buy new things. The look resonated deeply with Seattleites’ tendency toward nonconformity.
