Official ribbon armband for the Silver Skis Open on Mount Rainier, 1947
Order an ImageThe Silver Skis is one of the classic races in Northwest ski history that started in 1934. It was an epic downhill race from Camp Muir at 10,000 feet on the side of Mount Rainier, down to Paradise at 5,400 feet. There was a mass start and the first one to the finish line was the winner. The races were pre-empted during World War II and, in 1947, only 20 men competed which was a big reduction from the 60-plus participants in previous years. The races ended in 1948.
