Speed Graphic camera, 4x5, used by photographer Al Smith, ca. 1947
Al Smith was a prominent local Black photographer who captured 65 years of Seattle history. He owned many cameras over the years. Around 1947, he bought this Speed Graphic from Warshal’s on First Avenue in downtown Seattle. He once said, "People took me more seriously with the Speed Graphic; I could cross police lines, get backstage, even walk right out onstage."
