This coat was sold in Seattle at Best’s Apparel. Best’s was a women’s clothing store founded by Dorothy Cabot Best (1888-1958) and Ivan Lovich Best (1887-1979). The store opened in 1925 on Third Avenue between Pine and Pike and moved to a larger location at 5th and Pine in 1935. The label on this coat includes one of their slogans: “Best's Apparel : For Young Women of All Ages.” Best’s was sold to Nordstrom in 1963 as Nordstrom began growing from a shoe store into a fashion-oriented specialty store. The coat belonged to Mary Frances "Fran" Ross Humphrey who was born in Seattle in 1910. Her daughter donated the coat to MOHAI and shared this memory: "As a child I remember watching her dress to got out for the evening, looking impossibly glamorous to me--and so beautiful--wearing this coat."
