Order an ImageIn 1978, Jim Wickwire (b. 1940) was the first American to summit K2 which is the second highest mountain in the world at 28,251 feet. He reached the summit with Louis Reichardt. Wickwire is also known for his overnight solo bivouac on K2 at an elevation above 27,000 feet. He is a retired attorney living in Seattle, Washington.
