In 1978, Jim Wickwire (b. 1940) was the first American to summit K2 which is the second highest mountain in the world at 28,251 feet. He reached the summit with Louis Reichardt. Wickwire is also known for his overnight solo bivouac on K2 at an elevation above 27,000 feet. He is a retired attorney living in Seattle, Washington. REI is a retail and outdoor recreation services corporation founded in Seattle by Lloyd and Mary Anderson in 1938. It is organized as a consumers' co-operative and sells sporting goods, camping gear, travel equipment, and clothing.
