Small black box with John Doyle Bishop image and signature, ca. 1950s-1960s
John Doyle Bishop (1913-1980) operated a high-end women’s clothing store in Seattle from 1950 until his death in 1980. He sourced designer garments from the United States and Europe and provided personalized fashion advice for his devoted clients.
This box was donated by the daughter of Masae Yamashita, who worked for Bishop for about twenty years in the 1950s and 1960s. During that time Bishop gave Yamashita many gifts, particularly at Christmas. This box was likely one of those gifts. The interior of the box says "Lanvin" which suggests that it may have held Lanvin perfume.
