Christopher Knab and John "Buck" Ormsby founded the Northwest Area Music Association (NAMA) in 1987. Starting in 1988, NAMA held annual award ceremonies to recognize the region’s historic standout musicians with Gold Record presentations and admission to its Pacific Northwest Hall of Fame. Groundbreaking guitarist and songwriter Jimi Hendrix (1942-1970), who was born and grew up in Seattle, was an obvious choice for one of the first awardees.
