University of Washington Husky Helmet Car, ca. 1977

The University of Washington Husky Helmet Car patrolled the sidelines at home games from 1977 to 2013, when it was officially retired. The helmet was originally designed for the Husky’s 1977 Rose Bowl appearance, but was disqualified from the parade for lack of flowers. Beneath the helmet sits a Volkswagen chassis and motor that were both donated by UW Alumnus Bill Blume, from his car dealership in the Ravenna neighborhood. It has appeared in many Seattle Torch Light Parades, Seafair Parades, and the Friday Harbor celebration on San Juan Island.
