Order an ImageThe Foo Fighters were started by Dave Grohl in Seattle in 1994. Initially it was a one-man project for Grohl after the death of Kurt Cobain and the dissolution of Nirvana. He later recruited former members of Sunny Day Real Estate, bassist Nate Mendel and drummer William Goldsmith, as well as Nirvana touring bandmate Pat Smear as guitarist. The group got its name from the UFOs and various aerial phenomena that were reported by Allied aircraft pilots in World War II, which were known collectively as foo fighters.
