This 1960s skirt suit was made by Originala, a high-end New York coat and suit company, and sold in Seattle at Best’s Apparel. Best’s was a women’s clothing store founded by Dorothy Cabot Best (1888-1958) and Ivan Lovich Best (1887-1979). The store opened in 1925 on Third Avenue between Pine and Pike and moved to a larger location at 5th and Pine in 1935. It was sold to Nordstrom in 1963 as Nordstrom began growing from a shoe store into a fashion-oriented specialty store. This suit is from the estate of sisters Genevieve (1912 - 2008) and Donna Gorder (1921-2018). Genevieve was a teacher for blind students and Donna worked as a research technician in medical labs at both the Veteran’s Hospital on Beacon Hill and the University of Washington. They shared a home in Madison Park and both enjoyed shopping for (and wearing) designer clothing from local stores.
