This impeccably elegant 1980s dress was designed by Hanae Mori. Mori was one of the first Japanese designers to break into the high-fashion market in both France and the United States. She is one of only two Japanese women to have presented her collections on the runways of Paris and New York, and the first Asian woman to be admitted as an official haute couture design house by the fédération française de la couture in France. The dress belonged to Donna Gorder (1921-2018), a research technician in medical labs at both the Veteran’s Hospital on Beacon Hill and the University of Washington. Donna and her sister Genevieve shared a home in Madison Park and both enjoyed shopping for (and wearing) designer clothing that they found in local stores.
