Prairie Underground was founded in Seattle in 2004 by designers Camilla Eckersley and Davora Lindner. This “Cloak Hoodie” is a sales sample from 2007 and features several design elements that would become signatures for the company. It features a dramatic puffy hood which can be folded down to create a cloak-like effect over the shoulders, puffed sleeves, a fitted bust, crescent-shaped pockets, and a flare at the bottom. The company soon became known for their unique hooded sweatshirts. This one can be identified as a sample because the zipper is red instead of pink. Hoodies produced for sale had zippers that matched the color of the fabric. Prairie Underground aims to incorporate sustainability and ethical business practices into all parts of its production process. The company works to sustain Seattle’s existing resources and strengthen its manufacturing, in an era after the local apparel industry suffered decades of decline. All pieces are made in Seattle, in small editions each season. The sewing contractors all live within 25 minutes of the city. Fabrics are dyed in a sustainable process and frequently made from organic fibers.
