The Wawona, built in 1897, was an iconic logging schooner for the Pacific Northwest until 1947. Northwest Seaport, a local maritime organization, became the caretaker of the Wawona in 1965. In 2009, the Wawona was dismantled and the parts distributed to other non-profit organizations. MOHAI received several parts for use in the construction and display of exhibits, including this massive work of art by John Grade which is featured in the atrium of the museum. Weighing 11,000 pounds and consisting of over 200 wooden panels, the sculpture stands 63.5 feet high with 56 feet within the building, 5 feet visible below the floor, and 2 1/2 feet jutting from the roof.
