Approve Referendum 74 political sign, ca. 2012
In February 2012, the Washington State legislature passed a law granting same-sex couples the right to marry. Opponents of the law collected enough signatures to send the law to statewide vote in November. Voters were asked to approve Referendum 74 if they supported marriage equality or reject it if they wanted marriage to remain between a man and a woman only. Washington United For Marriage led the approve campaign, and this sign was the main one used for yard signs and during rallies and marches. At the time same-sex marriage had a 32-state losing streak at the ballot box, but in November 2012, Washington, Maine, and Maryland became the first states to approve marriage equality by popular vote.
