Beer bottle, Heidelberg Ale, Columbia Breweries, 1958
Emil Kliese, a German immigrant and brewmaster, arrived in the Pacific Northwest in the 1890s. He founded the Columbia Brewing Company in Tacoma with partner Wiliam C. Kiltz in 1900. Over the years, they added various brands of beer including Columbia Brew and Alt Heidelberg, eventually changing their name to Heidelberg Brewing Company in 1953. The original Columbia-Heidelberg Brewery in Tacoma closed in 1979 when the company was purchased by a larger corporation.
