The Seattle Sounders formed as a North American Soccer League (NASL) team in 1974, and joined Major League Soccer (MLS) in 2009. Fredy Montero, a Colombian professional soccer player, was part of the inaugural team where he was named Newcomer of the Year and he led the team in goals. He played four seasons with the Seattle Sounders, then moved on to play for other teams. Montero returned to the Sounders in 2021.
