Set of five house moving log rollers, ca. 1880
These rollers were made from a maple tree that was cut down in 1880 at what is today 14th and Jackson in Seattle. The wood was airdried for several years before being cut into rollers, which were used to move houses during the Denny Regrade in the early 1900s, and later for the Dearborn cut and Atlantic Street overpass projects in the 1950s. John Dochnahl, whose business, Dochnahl Construction was established in 1946, acquired these rollers from his neighbor Woody Wilson. Woody had worked on the Denny Regrade and he had taught John how to move houses.
