This hatch cover was salvaged from the Naval Reserve Center Armory building on the southern shore of Lake Union where MOHAI now resides. Construction for the Naval Reserve began in 1940 and completed in 1942. During WWII the site hosted an Advanced Naval Training School and a modified "Tank Room" complete with hatches, submarine equipment, and other naval materials constructed for this purpose. Recruits would practice drills in the Tank Room under the same types of environment and pressures as experienced on a submarine.
