Totem pole made by the Suquamish Tribe, ca. 1914
The pole was made by the Suquamish tribe and presented as a gift at the grand opening of the Seattle YWCA building in 1914. It was one of two poles that stood outside the main doorway of the facility for many years. The Seattle YWCA was founded in 1894 by Mrs. Rees Daniels and 28 local women with the purpose of providing services to women in need looking to establish self-support and stability. Their original building, located at 5th Avenue and Seneca Street, is still their headquarters today.
