The 1960s was a turbulent time for civil unrest and here it is captured in a way that shows movement, vibrancy and human action. The artist, Lorene Spencer (1923-2016), was more well known for her pottery and clay sculptures. She and her then-husband Ralph owned a studio in south Seattle in the 1950s and 1960s. Lorene also produced "painted" ceramic tiles that often used impressions from a modified printing block. The Spencer Pottery was known for its high quality local sourced clays and the glazes mixed from Washington State minerals gathered by Ralph Spencer. MOHAI also has a collection of clay sculptures by Spencer that depict the different stalls and vendors at Pike Place Market.
