Hans Bok (1914-1964) was born in Missouri and came to Seattle in 1938 where he was one of the youngest artists to work for the Federal Arts Project in this city. While at work, Bok often took out a pen and drew artists working in the project studios in the Alaska Building. This image features Fay Chong in the lower left hand corner working on a woodcut. Chong was Bok's lifelong friend, and this drawing was given to Chong as a gift. Other Works Progress Adminstration (WPA) artists visible in the picture include Julius Twohy, Jacob Elshin, and Mark Tobey. After the Depression, Hans Bok went on to great fame and acclaim as an illustrator of science fiction pulp magazines.
