Internationally-known glass artist, Dale Chihuly (b.1941) was born in Tacoma, Washington, and studied interior design at the University of Washington where he was first introduced to glass. After returning from working in the Venetian glass industry, he incorporated the team approach to blowing glass, and established the Pilchuck Glass School in Washington State in 1971. A car accident in the late 1970s left him blind in one eye, and that is when he started drawing to communicate his designs and ideas to his fabrication team. Chihuly’s drawings feature black-and-white charcoal designs, as well as pencil and acrylic paintings, as seen here in this vase-like image.
