War protest art assemblage, guitar covered with paint and army toys, 2004
This guitar assemblage was made by local Seattle artist Scott MacIntire in 2004 in protest of the US-led invasion of Iraq, and subsequent Iraq War. The piece was created in conjunction with a 2004 fundraiser for the Hope Heart Institute, for which Art Institute of Seattle students and faculty embellished 30 electric guitars with various messages. The invasion and war have sparked strong protests since 2003, and it has been estimated that 36 million people around the world took part in some 3,000 organized protests. Among US cities, Seattle has been particularly active in Iraq War protests. Approximately 50,000 people participated in the February 15, 2003, protest march from the Seattle Center - more people than participated in the 1999 WTO protests in Seattle.
