American flag dress, worn by Edna Elizabeth Morrison as Miss Liberty at the AYPE, 1909
September 11, 1909 was New England Day at the AYPE. During the event, twelve-year-old Edna Elizabeth Morrison as Miss Liberty rode in the back of Colonel Blethen's convertible, wearing this dress and sash made from American flag bunting. That morning, a group of Seattleites who traced their history to New England disembarked from a reproduction Mayflower and landed on the shore of Portage Bay. They were met at the foot of the Pay Streak by members of the Order of Red Men, a fraternal organization, costumed as Native Americans. The day was filled with ceremonies, receptions, a “New England” dinner, a patriotic parade and music, and it ended with a ball and fireworks.
