Ivory cross pendant with gold nugget from the AYPE, 1909
This cross is a souvenir of the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition (AYPE), a world’s fair held in Seattle in 1909. The exposition publicized the development of the Pacific Northwest and positioned Seattle as a gateway to Alaska and the Pacific Rim. It is made of Alaskan ivory and contains a small gold nugget. The materials were reminders of Seattle’s prosperity that was tied to the Alaska Gold Rush that began in 1897.
