Seattle High School opened in 1902 on the corner of Broadway and E Pine Street on Capitol Hill. It was the first building to be purpose-built as a high school in Seattle and served students across the city. Despite initial concerns about its size and location, the school was at capacity within a year. In 1907 a second high school, Lincoln High School, opened in Wallingford. Seattle High School was soon after renamed as Broadway High School. In 1946 Broadway closed as a high school and instead focused on serving a population of adult learners such as returning WWII veterans. Seattle Central College purchased the site in 1966.
