Braun-Diessel Bioreactor, ca. 1990
A bioreactor is a device that grows human cells or tissues. This bioreactor comes from the biotech company Immunex which was founded in Seattle in 1981 by research scientists Steven Gillis and Christopher Henney who were then studying human hormones and proteins at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. By 2001, Immunex was the largest biotechnology company in Washington State. Amgen acquisitioned Immunex in 2002 and was a leading biotech company located on the shore of Lake Union until it closed its operations in 2015.
