Yasushi Tanaka (1886-1941) was born in Japan and moved to Seattle in 1904 where he graduated from high school. He studied art, exhibited and taught at the Seattle Fine Art Association from 1901-1920. Yasushi married Louise Gebhard Cann who was from a notable Seattle family. Cann's father, Judge Thomas Hart Cann, was Seattle's police court judge and held a few other city posts. Her brother, Thomas Hart Cann, Jr., was a lawyer in his younger years, but later became a Pacific Coast steamship captain until his death.
