Print, "Keep Clam" 4 cent stamp, 1960
In 1960, the state of Maine promoted its seafood industry with a sardine stamp. Ivar Haglund, founder of Ivar's seafood restaurant chain and publicity stunt prankster, campaigned for a "clam stamp." Artist William Werrbach created the design, but the novelty stamp was later revoked by the US Postal Service. According to Werrbach, the printing plates and stamps featuring the clam were confiscated by the Secret Service, but not his original artwork.
