WTO protest sign, "Not For Sale: Animals, Women, Our Food, Our Bodies, Life," 1999
Order an ImageThis homemade sign was carried during the World Trade Organization (WTO) protests in Seattle in 1999. Tens of thousands of activists for many causes gathered to protest what they saw as the WTO's favoring of corporate interests over social and environmental concerns. Heavy police response included the use of riot gear, tear gas, and rubber bullets. The back side of the sign quotes the first and fourth constitutional amendments which guarantee the right of free speech and protection against unreasonable searches and seizures.
