The Kingdome, officially called the King County Multipurpose Domed Stadium, was built in 1976 south of downtown Seattle. The “SODO” neighborhood was originally named as such because it was “south of the dome.” The illustrations on this pennant represent some of the sports and events that the new stadium was expecting to host. The Kingdome was best known for Seattle Seahawks (football) and Seattle Mariners (baseball) games. But the first professional sporting event hosted there was an exhibition soccer game between the Seattle Sounders (North American Soccer League) and the New York Cosmos. The Kingdome also hosted rodeos, which is represented here with a figure on a bucking horse. Beloved by some, hated by others, "The Dome" had a troubled history, including the infamous incident in 1994 when the waterlogged interior ceiling collapsed due to a badly leaking roof and mishandled pressure washing. A new baseball stadium was built in 1997 right next to the Kingdome. Then, on March 26, 2000, many Seattleites, as well as people across the nation, watched as the Kingdome imploded to make way for a new Seahawks football stadium.
