Burn barrel used during Teamster's Strike, ca. 2000
In November 2000, the members of the Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild Local 82 went on strike against the Seattle Times and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer over issues concerning salaries and the use of a merit-based pay system. Other groups joined the strike including the Teamsters Local 174 and the members of Local 2001 SPEEA IFPTE (International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers). The strikers settled with the P-I after 38 days and the Times after 49 days. This barrel, featuring the Teamsters number and positioned at the corner of Thomas and Fairview, kept the strikers warm during the cold days of November.
