Recreational Equipment Inc. (REI) imported these hiking boots from Switzerland to sell in its Seattle store. They belonged to Seattleite Leila Martin, who wore them to climb Mount Rainier in 1970.
Lloyd and Mary Anderson founded REI in 1938 as a way to get better gear for climbing. They formed the co-op to buy high-quality gear from Europe in large, cost-effective batches with friends from the Mountaineers, a local club devoted to outdoor recreation, education, and preservation. Today, REI sells its own in-house lines of clothing and gear in addition to top brands from around the world.
