Oil painting, "Across from Broadway" by Doris Chase, 1951

Doris Totten Chase (1923-2008) was a leading Northwest artist for almost 50 years and a member of the Northwest School. A native of Seattle, she studied architecture at the University of Washington. She also studied oil painting with Russian émigré artist Jacob Elshin, with Mark Tobey, and with Greek artist Nickolas Damascus. Chase worked as a painter for fifteen years, then as a sculptor for a decade, before entering the world of video art. Her latest work was in glass and steel. Chase’s sculptural installations and pioneering work in video are recognized around the world, including her sculptures "Changing Form" in Seattle’s Kerry Park and "Moon Gates" at Seattle Center.
