Neon "R" sign from the Rainier Brewing Company, ca. 1950
This “R” was one of 6 different designs used as logos for the Seattle brewing company. At twelve feet high, it was installed atop the Rainier Brewery in late 1952 just before the company's 75th anniversary in 1953. Initially, the “R” rotated slowly, until it became too much of a distraction to drivers on Interstate 5, and the rotation stopped. When the "R" was removed, a bullet hole was discovered along with the bullet which is also in the MOHAI collection. The neon "R" currently atop the Rainiery Brewery building is a replica.
