Mock road crossing sign advertising Rainier Beer, ca. 1996
A play on the word "reindeer", this mock sign jokingly warns unsuspecting travelers of possible wild "Rainbeers" in the vicinity. In the 1970s, a local ad agency created and aired a series of commercials featuring human-sized beer bottles running through the woods and city streets. It culminated in the "Running of the Rainiers," a live event held in downtown Seattle's Pioneer Square in 1977, in which a pack of costumed "wild Rainiers" ran through the square. MOHAI has one of these bottle costumes in its collection.
