Order an ImageDr. Kathryn Harrison was one of the first physicians specializing in obstetrics in Seattle. She was arrested twice in 1912 at the age of 50. The first arrest was for the murder of a young woman from Vancouver, British Columbia, who probably died from complications from an abortion. The second arrest was part of a national sting operation against doctors and others using the mail for illegal purposes. Most likely, Dr. Harrison was advertising either birth control or abortion services. She was also active in local women's suffrage efforts. The artist, Herbert Muehlenbeck (1886-1947), attended the Chicago Art Institute before moving to Seattle. He was known for landscapes and portraits, and painted a couple Washington State governors and several University of Washington leaders.
