This home defense artifact was sold nationwide as a security measure during World War II. It is difficult to believe that this is a safe activity and this seemingly simple wooden pail should probably not have been marketed as such. Nevertheless, here are the instructions for using the BomPail as posted on the outside of the bucket: "(1) Scatter dry sand around bomb to a depth of 3 inches. (2) Roll bomb onto sand and cover it with more sand. (3) Extinguish fire cased by bomb. (Do Not Permit solid stream of water to come in contact with bomb). (4) Provide 3-inch cushion of dry sand in BomPail. (5) Place bomb in BomPail, using dry long-handled shovel. (6) Remove bomb and dump it in safe location out-of-doors. (7) Investigate thoroughly to be certain fire is entirely extinguished, especially under floor where bomb landed. (8) Keep BomPail in a cool dry place." The label also states that "The BomPail may be used as a general utility bucket in your home...for liquids, foods, fireplace wood, waste basket, etc."
